New Studies Show Humans Love Dogs More Than Other Humans

What if a human and a dog stood side-by-side and both needed help, but you could only choose one. It wouldn’t be an easy decision, would it? Some studies reveal when it comes to feeling empathy, many people pick pooches over other people. Does that surprise you?

Sociologists and anthropologists from Northeastern University and the University of Colorado pondered why, when reports of animals in need make headlines, the outrage and response level is sometimes higher than when tragedies impact humans.

The researchers asked 256 college students to read a fictitious news report, and reveal their levels of empathy for a brutally beaten adult or child versus an adult dog or puppy.

The results: The undergrads felt more empathy toward the dogs than the adult human. The study says, “We also found more empathy for victims who are human children, puppies, and fully-grown dogs than for victims who are adult humans. Age makes a difference for empathy toward human victims, but not for dog victims.”

The study also mentions a British charity which also conducted its own dog-versus-person empathy experiment. It ran a fundraising campaign featuring two versions of the same ad. Click Open or Arrow Button to Complete Read

  1. I absolutely love dogs and animals more then most people hands down I’d take a dog over a kid any day of the week but I’m sure humane will use this soft spot against other humans case in point!!$$???

  2. With dogs you get unconditionally love 24 / 7. With humans they are fake, they don’t do what they say and can change in the blink of an eye. Yes I prefer dogs 100 percent over humans any day…..

  3. Interesting article and yet I bet there’s a very high percentage of empathetic people that would carry on eating animals as soon as they crave a burger, bacon sandwich or a hot ‘dog’.

  4. OUR FURBIES DO NOT LIE, STEAL FROM
    YOU. >
    WELL > MAYBE A T-BONE OR TOO. LOL>
BUT THEY DON’T STEAL SOMETHING OF VALUE. & THEY DON’T CHEAT, NOR PLAY ALL THE NOT SO NICE HEAD TRIPS & STAB FRIENDS NOR THEIR FRIENDS IN THE BACK. OUR FURBIES LOVE US WITHOUT THE PHONINESS.
THEY SENSE HOW WE FEEL & ALWAYS BY OUR SIDE > UNLIKE ALOT OF MATES WHO WALK OUT THE DOOR w/0 CONCERN.

  5. I totally agree I thought I was the only one to feel this way .but dare you say it and you get people saying your a bad person to say that .I definitely pick a dog or cat over any human being. How many dogs or cats or any animal do any hurt or damage.humans are class at it

  6. That is a little harshly exaggerated. My brothers and parents = I love either more or equal to my 4dogs. More $$$ Are given to Cancer, American Heart Association, etc Than Any Animal Charity.

  7. Yes!! I cried more to a dog than the death of a human! even if they are familiar! The death of the people I forget soon! The death of a dog makes me cry forever and I carry it in my heart forever !! ❤️

  8. I believe that man was given the dog to be man’s best friend. So that we could learn from them what unconditional LOVE looks like so that we could be more like Jesus. Unfortunately we think we’re the smart ones and that the dog learns from us. Think about it… why else would a dog be called dog and man’s best friend… What’s doG spelled backwards anyway!!! I’m gonna go give my doG a huge hug!

    • I totally agree . I am autistic and my dogs have taught me so much more than any professional’s in the psychiatric profession or their drugs ever could. Because of my mental health I was not accepted into churches cause they believed I must be demonic and needed deliverance cause of my love for nature I could see God in everything soooooo beautiful.bible says everything that has life has the breath of Jesus in . So in my isolated existence God brought my first dog and my first teacher and the subject he was gifted to teach me was how to be a human .

  9. It’s hard to tell whose real nowadays, but for most parts, a bulldog is gonna be a bulldog and a labrador is gonna be a labrador, I can’t say the same for a Peter or a Julia.

  10. its funny people think its horrible to eat a dog..but ok to eat cow, pig, chickens, deer..makes no sense..its all animals..btw i don’t own pets..

  11. And there’s nothing wrong with that!
I mean on one hand you got unconditional love, that inspire us to be better humans 🤷‍♂️ on the other hand you got a paranoid monkey with anxiety. 😝

  12. I am an avid dog lover… with three furry children myself…I would do anything for them.. humans not so much! Pets for me specifically dogs are the epitome of true ,unconditional love 💕 Humans are neither! So I truly choose dogs over humans any day!

  13. The reason is very simple: dogs (no matter the age) and small children are HELPLESS and dependent on us – they need our care for survival. That is why news of abuse hits us harder – you should never harm someone who is innocent and incapable of defense. Whereas adult humans are/should be capable of taking care of themselves.
Exceptions being brutal group attacks on a single adult human, for which we also feel more empathy than when we read a story of a one-on-one attack.
The level of empathy for a crime depends on a level of unfairness. A child and dogs cannot defend themselves.

  14. Personally I have more sympathy and empathy for a child and puppies/dogs because they are helpless and can’t defend themselves from a brutal attack.
Humans can call 911 for help..a young child or dog doesn’t have this ability.

  15. Loving dogs has a lot to do with NOT eating meat!! What is the difference between a pig, a cow or a dog. All feel pain, and emotion and love for their family. All suffer the same!!!!

    • Life feeds on life. Even if it’s plant life. Get off your high horse (so I can eat it). What do you all say to all those evil wolves, lions, sharks and the like? Why don’t they eat plants? Sharks have all that seaweed they can munch on. Or what about the cows and deer that eat baby birds and the like?

I love all animals, and appreciate the ones I eat. Do yall actually appreciate your onions? I doubt it. I especially love dogs, and I’m not a fan of most people, but I’d save the human every time because they’re a PERSON. All life is not equal. You don’t think twice to swat a fly but if it has a cute face on it all of a sudden it’s worth saving over a person. That’s batsh*it crazy

  16. Wow, I’m shocked that every comment is choosing a dog over a fellow human being. This is a sign of society failing and it’s sad that people aren’t more caring of each other. Does everbody who cares more about a pet over another person really want me to save their dog over them if they are both trapped in a burning vehicle?

  17. I can’t remember any time before my love affair with dogs. They were there for me in my most difficult times growing up. I love all creatures but I’ve chosen dogs as they’ve chosen me. Since I’ve retired, I’ve rescued and fostered puppies, adult dogs, and seniors, some with disabilities. This mission gives me something I don’t get from almost all people. I always say, “Dogs and kids love me. Grown ups, not so much.” Well, guess what, I feel the same way about them. Dogs and babies for me.
